As an employer of a student using STEM OPT for employment you have reporting responsibilities to USCIS. Employers are required to notify the Designated School Official at the school who recommended OPT when employment is terminated or for any significant material changes to the I-983.

Material changes or deviations from the original Form I-983 include, but are not limited to:

  • Change of Employer Identification Number resulting from a corporate restructuring;
  • Reduction in employee compensation that is not tied to a reduction in hours worked;
  • Significant decrease in hours per week that a student engages in a STEM training opportunity;
  • Changes to the employer's commitments or student's learning objectives as documented on the Form I-983
