Approval Requirement:

Individuals, including family members, who wish to accompany a faculty leader on a study abroad program must be approved the Program Director and OIE. For the purposes of this policy, accompanying includes but is not limited to engaging with student participants, living in program housing, eating meals with the program, traveling on program transportation, participating in program arranged activities, etc. If an individual’s independent travel coincides with locations of a program, but does not include interacting with the student participants, then they are not considered accompanying, and are not required to seek approval for an official status on the program. Look for a reply from the Office of International Education.

Please submit a form for each individual accompanying you.

Background Checks:

Adult family members who are expected to interact with students on the program must have a background check (or equivalent) on file with OIE. Minor children do not require a background check. Example online background check option: https://checkr.com/personal-background-checks. You are not required to use this background check vendor; it is merely one option that we tested to try to be helpful.

USG Study Abroad Handbook:

The USG Study Abroad Handbook outlines the policy and procedures for faculty-led programs, including the need for approval and background checks. https://www.usg.edu/international_education//assets/international_education/documents/USG_Study_Abroad_Handbook.pdf
